Magic is an integral part of life on Arnathia. While few have achieved any real level of mastery, it is accepted as a normal element in everyday interactions. At one time, magic and technology worked together to advance the Urnati civilization. But since the Cataclysm, technology has been reviled and shunned by all but a few. Magic, however, remains.

“Magic” was actually a scientific development. Urnati scientists discovered that there were innate abilities in individuals that could be harnessed, mainly in the control of energy. Manipulation of electromagnetic energy, for example, could be achieved through focused effort by almost any individual, once they had learned the technique. All individuals had the ability to achieve this, but some were more naturally adept than others.

Initially, the process involved both technology and a “focusing” stone. There were a few of these stones throughout the world, and at the time of the Cataclysm, it is believed there were 23 such stones. Eventually, it was discovered that these stones could be used without any additional technology to assist in training individuals to control energy. The composition of these stones reflected back any energy directed at them, allowing individuals to learn by bio-feedback techniques. Because every Urnati had their own frequency (like a fingerprint), many individuals were able to use these stones simultaneously.

These stones were found in deeper mines throughout Urnati, and were primarily supplied by Torgaro Industries. They were installed in scientific facilities for both study and use in training. After the Cataclysm, however, most of these stones were lost in the rubble and destruction. Some have been retrieved, but most are lost to the ages.
